Hawaii Filipino Food Week showcases flavors of central Philippines

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – Now through Oct. 21, you can taste the unique flavors of central Philippines during the 6th annual Filipino Food Week.
Organized by the Philippine Consulate in Honolulu during Filipino American History Month, this year’s theme is “Flavors of Iloilo,” and features dishes at 18 restaurants across Hawaii and American Samoa that showcase the culinary heritage of Iloilo, a UNESCO-recognized creative city for gastronomy in the Visayas region of the Philippines.
Filipino-owned small businesses Sama Sama and Merienda Maui joined HNN’s Sunrise to talk about the special event and promoting their heritage through food and cooking.
Sama Sama, a food truck serving Filipino-inspired milk tea boba drinks, coffee and treats, has a cafe at Leeward Community College and just opened another location in downtown Honolulu at 1102 Bishop St. at Union Mall. Hours are Mon-Thu 8 a.m.-3 p.m. and Fri 8 a.m.-1 p.m.
Founders Lalaine Ignao and Eric Ganding made their newest milk tea flavor: papaya.
Merienda Maui is a food truck based at Pearlridge Center from Wed-Sun 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Its chef-owners Motley Adovas and Danielle Soriano showcased the beef kare kare balls they served at the recent Filipino Community Center Bayanihan gala.
